About Diana Burton

Hello, my name is Diana Burton and I am Athabaskan, Eyak, and Irish. I have been sewing with my mom, Monica Riedel, since the age of seven. During high school I did a four year apprenticeship with her. Later I studied and graduated with a degree in Rural Development, with minors in Native Art, and Alaska Native studies at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.  I now own and make all the products for Dineega Furs during the winter months, along with running a commercial fishing operation during the summer in my hometown of Cordova, Alaska. I enjoy spending time with my husband James, and daughter, Kiley Rae.  We love playing on the ocean, fishing, camping, hiking, traveling, and visiting with friends.

My mother, Monica Riedel, is half Athabascan from Kaltag, Alaska. She started Dineega Furs in 1982 with a pair of baby booties for me, and later went on to become a master skinsewer with a unique fancy parka style. She learned how to skin sew from her grandma Lizzy Semaken, and also trained at David Green Furs.  Now my mom runs the Alaska Native Harbor Seal Commission, a nonprofit organization, who's missions is "To ensure that harbor seals remain an essential cultural, spiritual, and nutritional element of our traditional way of life, and to promote the health of harbor seals in order to carry forward the cultural, spiritual, and nutritional traditions of Alaska Natives." In Monica's spare time she continues making beautiful sea otter headbands with fancy bead work, sea otter collar and cuff sets, fancy parkas, and jewelry.
